Polymyalgia Rheumatica

Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) is an inflammatory disorder that causes muscle pain and stiffness, especially in the shoulders, neck, hips, and thighs. It primarily affects older adults, typically those over 50 years old, and can develop suddenly or gradually.

  • Muscle Pain and Stiffness: Especially in the morning or after periods of inactivity.
  • Fatigue: Feeling tired and lacking energy.
  • Joint Stiffness: Often in the shoulders, neck, and hips.
  • Limited Range of Motion: Difficulty moving affected joints.

Causes and Risk Factors: The exact cause of PMR is unknown, but it is believed to involve an autoimmune response where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks its own tissues. Genetic predisposition and environmental factors may also play a role. Women are more commonly affected than men.

Diagnosis: Diagnosing PMR involves a thorough medical history, physical examination, blood tests to check for markers of inflammation (such as erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein), and sometimes imaging tests to rule out other conditions.
